When my husband passed away 5 years ago, I did not know how to deal with my new life. Every part of my life had changed. I was now an old lady living all by herself. My children took turns staying with me for a few weeks, to make sure I was going to make it through the grief, but eventually that stopped and I had to start spending most days and nights home alone. After about two months of eating dinners and doing all the housework without a single person to share it with, I decided to get a companion. I adopted a little mixed breed puppyfrom the local animal shelter and started carrying on conversations with the dog, who I named Cinnamon, after my late husband’s favorite flavoring and scent. Cinnamon kept me entertained during the day, but at night I continued to feel all alone. Eventually I started to feel scared at night. I would lay awake and every little pop and crack from the house settling in for the night, made me wonder if someone was trying to break in. I called my oldest son one night and asked him to drive 15 miles from his home, to mine, to make sure no one was in or around the house so that I could get up and go to the restroom. The next day my son had an alarm system installed from www.inhomesecurity.net, and I’ve not missed a night’s sleep since the installation.
